CASE # 7. AORTA DISSECTED Male age 21 his story. On Janaury 17 1996 I was
sitting at work when suddenly had a terrible pain in my chest, everytime my heart would beat, I
would have incredible pain. I got up to go get some water, thinking that would help. My vision
became very blurry, and I decided to go home, As I drove home (with what I describe as
tunnel vision, since I had virtually no periheal vision) I almost wrecked my car. From there I
went to my doctor who sent me to the hospital. The pain subsided, however I had an incredible headache. I spent the night in the hospital, where the next day I had an Echo Cardio
Gram done. Its turns out my Aorta dissected(split down the middle) and it effect damage my
Aorta heart valve. So Jan 18, 1996 I had a Bentall procedure done where they re-grafted my
aorta with a synthetic dacron piece, and replaced my heart valve with an artifical one. All of the signs lead to a disease called Marfan Syndrome, which will be comfirmed after researchers
at John Hopkins University finish determining whether or not my fibrilin gene contains the Marfan defective chromosome. The most amazing thing about all of this is that I WAS ONLY
21 WHEN THIS HAPPENED! The doctor said that most people die when there aorta dissects like mine did. I am doing fine now, I just take medication for the maintaince of my
heart valve.
